Mukutmanipur / Susunia / Bishnupur - The Sedating Lost World

Mukutmanipur – 200 kms away from the city of Kolkata , Mukutmanipur is a village in Bankura district of West Bengal. Mukutmanipur is situated at the confluence of the river Kangsabati and Kumari and holds the 2nd largest earthen dam in the country spreaded over an area of 3625 sq. kms. The vast bluish water surrounded by forests and hillocks us bound to mesmerize you with its beauty and you just can’t close your camera's lens , for sure. Susunia – is a hill in Bankura district of West Bengal with an altitude of 1200 ft. and is believed to be older than the great mountain Himalaya in age. Susunia is a hill of significant archeological importance and has been a site wherefrom fossils of asiatic lions , giraffe , hyena and other animal species have been discovered. Some 4th century's inscriptions found in Susunia makes historians believe that during 4th century it was the capital of king Chandravarman and was known as Pushkarna. The king Chandravana lost his battle to the Gupta emperor Samudragupta and the area became a part of Gupta empire.  This is further supported by the inscriptions of Samudragupta found in Allahabad.

The town has many temples constructed during Malla kings ( 17th & early 18th century ) that carry its signature art Terracotta and a Museum which can take you back to ages of Malla reign.
